Arafat Jamal

Arafat Jamal currently serves as the Representative for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, focusing on stabilizing and anchoring refugee returns to Afghanistan since July 2024. Previously, Arafat held several key positions at UNHCR, including Coordinator for the Second Global Refugee Forum, where leadership in political engagement and organization was paramount, and roles as Representative and Head of various departments aimed at enhancing responses to refugee needs. Arafat's experience also includes acting as Humanitarian Coordinator and UN Resident Coordinator in South Sudan, improving international humanitarian responses as Chief of the Inter-Agency Standing Committee, and significant roles in Jordan and Libya during critical periods. Arafat's educational background features a Master's degree in Forced Migration from the University of Oxford and dual Bachelor's degrees in History and Urban Planning from Cornell University, along with additional training in development evaluation.
