Lene Wendland

Chief, Business And Human Rights Section at United Nations Human Rights

Lene Wendland has extensive work experience in the field of human rights. Lene started their career in 1991 as a Research Officer at the Danish Institute for Human Rights, where they focused on issues such as freedom of expression, access to information, racial discrimination, and the rights of the child. In 1994, they joined the University of the Witwatersrand as the Head of the Media Law Unit. In this role, Lene provided legal research, policy advice, and advocacy on freedom of expression and access to information in South Africa, including contributing to the drafting of provisions in the post-Apartheid South African Constitution. Since 2002, Lene has been working at the United Nations Human Rights, initially as the Head of the Business and Human Rights section, and later as the Chief of several sections, including the Business and Human Rights Team, the Child Rights Team, the Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Team, and the Human Rights and Disabilities Team. At the United Nations, Lene has developed particular expertise in the areas of Business and Human Rights, the human rights responsibilities of development finance institutions, and sport and human rights.

Lene Wendland obtained a Master's Degree in Law from Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen, completing their studies from 1984 to 1990. Additionally, they pursued studies in Political Science and Government at Whittier College, the duration and degree obtained at this institution are unknown.
