The United States Mint is the sole manufacturer of legal tender coinage and is responsible for producing and circulating coinage for the Nation to conduct its trade and commerce. It also produces proof, uncirculated, and commemorative coins; Congressional Gold Medals; and silver, gold and platinum bullion coins.The United States Mint wasfounded in 1792 and is based in Washington, D.C. It operates six facilities across the United States with each facility performing unique functions. Current facilities include the Headquarters in Washington, DC; production facilities in Philadelphia, PA; West Point, NY; Denver, CO; and San Francisco, CA; and the United States Bullion Depository at Fort Knox, KY.
