Daniel Jutras

Daniel Jutras is a graduate in law from the University of Montreal and Harvard University, Daniel Jutras taught at the Faculty of Law of McGill University from 1985 to 2020, where he held the Wainwright Chair in Civil Law for 10 years. . Dean of the faculty from 2009 to 2016, he led a major reform of teaching programs and completed fundraising of more than $35 million. A specialist in civil law and comparative law, Daniel Jutras has devoted his research to questions of judicial institutions and dispute resolution from a comparative and pluralistic perspective. He directed the Institute of Comparative Law at McGill University from 1998 to 2002.

Between 2002 and 2004, he took time off from law school to act as senior legal counsel to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, the Right Honorable Beverley McLachlin. He appeared before the Supreme Court twice, at the invitation of the latter. He served on the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments from 2016 to 2018 and was an ethics consultant to the Canadian Judicial Council.

Recognized for his expertise in university governance, Daniel Jutras has several times been invited to sit on independent audit committees with leading institutions, including Harvard University, HEC Paris, and, in the country, the law faculties of universities of Toronto, Dalhousie, and Queen's.

His contributions to academic life, Canadian politics, and educational innovation were recently recognized by his appointment as an Officer of the Order of Canada. As a professor at McGill University, Daniel Jutras received an award for excellence in teaching. He also received the Merit of the Barreau du Québec in 2016, the Distinction Avocat émérite du Barreau du Québec in 2014, and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013.
