Ian Heptinstall

Ian Heptinstall serves as an Associate Professor of Project Management at the University of Birmingham, specializing in project management education within the Masters in Industrial Project Management program. In addition to this role, Ian is a Researcher in Residence at Connected Places Catapult, leading a UKRI-funded project addressing systemic obstacles to technical innovation in the UK rail industry. Ian also holds a position as a Doctoral Researcher at Birmingham Business School, exploring the dynamics of project management approaches. As a consultant, coach, and advisor, Ian provides expertise in Breakthrough Project Management and procurement capabilities. Experience includes committee work with the Association for Project Management and authorship of "The Executive Guide to Breakthrough Project Management." Previous roles encompass senior positions at h&z Management Consulting, ArcBlue, NG Bailey, and REL Consultancy Group, with a strong background in supply chain and procurement management. Ian's educational foundation includes a B.Eng in Mechanical Engineering and Business from Imperial College London and further studies at Alliance Manchester Business School.
