Sonia DeLuca Fernández

Sonia DeLuca Fernández is the Senior Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at University of Colorado Boulder. Fernández has been in this role since August 2021.

Prior to their current position, Fernández served as the Associate Vice Provost for Educational Equity at Penn State from November 2016 to August 2021. In this role, Fernández was responsible for leading Penn State's educational equity efforts, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socio-economic status, sex, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, age, disability, and veteran status.

Before their time at Penn State, Fernández was the Director of Research & Assessment at New York University from August 2008 to November 2016. In this role, Fernández was responsible for overseeing the Division of Student Affairs' assessment, program evaluation, and research initiatives. This included conceptualizing, designing, administering, analyzing, and presenting results of evaluations for the university.

Fernández began their career in higher education as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Michigan from August 2002 to July 2008. In this role, they provided support to students and staff within the university's commuter student services department.

Fernández holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Rutgers University and a Master of Education in Higher Education & Student Affairs from the University of Michigan.

Sonia DeLuca Fernández earned their Ph.D. in Higher Education from the University of Michigan. Her research interests include social foundations of education, African American studies, and higher education policy. Sonia earned their M.A. in Social Foundations of Education from the University of Iowa and their B.A. in African American Studies from the University of Iowa.
