Robert Vowels

Director of Athletics at University of Detroit Mercy

Robert Vowels is the current Director of Athletics at University of Detroit Mercy. Robert has held this position since December 2013. Prior to their current role, they served as Vice President of Student-Athlete Affairs at the NCAA from January 2007 to December 2013.

Before their time at the NCAA, Vowels was the Associate Commissioner at the Big Ten Conference from January 1994 to December 2000. Robert then served as Assistant Athletic Director at Vanderbilt University from January 1989 to December 1994.

In 2002, Vowels became Commissioner of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), a role they held until 2007. Robert then served as Commissioner of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) from January 2000 to December 2002.

Vowels began their career as a Law Clerk at the Tennessee Human Rights Commission from January 1988 to December 1989.

Robert Vowels has a Juris Doctorate from North Carolina Central University School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts from Duke University in Political Science and Government.
