Wendy Floyd Murphy

Wendy Floyd Murphy, of Wallace, NC, was appointed by the North Carolina General Assembly in 2017 to serve on the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina System. Her term will end in 2021.

Murphy is the vice chair of the Board, and serves on the Committee on Budget and Finance and on the Committee on Audit, Risk Management, and Compliance Committee.

In 2004, Murphy Family Ventures was formed to manage the day-to-day operations of the Murphy family businesses. Murphy is involved in the hospitality segment, which includes the River Landing community, Mad Boar Restaurant, and a hotel.

She believes that higher education is critical to meeting the needs of all individuals in our state and even beyond. She feels the commonly-held wisdom about the University's importance to North Carolina is correct: whether it is fostering critical research or preparing the next generation of teachers and business leaders to succeed, the UNC System is truly the economic engine driving our state. Its role is vital in helping move our state and its citizens forward.

As a former teacher, she has taken an active role in talking with students and parents about the issues they face in education. She supports the goals of access and affordability and thinks that our institutions should develop resources to help students find jobs upon graduation.

Originally from Rose Hill, NC, Murphy has been active in public service for decades. She currently serves on the University of North Carolina at Wilmington Foundation Board and previously served on the UNCW Board of Trustees (2005-2015), participating in two chancellor searches. She also serves on Harrells Christian Academy's Board of Directors and is chair of River Landing Hope for Warriors Invitational.

She previously served on the Duplin County Education Foundation, Duplin County Community Foundation, and Vidant Duplin Hospital Board of Directors. She continues to work in various leadership roles for Wallace United Methodist Church.

Murphy earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education from UNC Wilmington.

She and her husband Dell have two children, Wen and Regan, both recent graduates of the Poole College of Management at North Carolina State University.
