Rodney B. Hanners

CEO of Keck Medicine of USC & President and CEO of USC Health System at University of Southern California

Rodney B. Hanners was appointed chief executive officer for Keck Medicine of USC in September 2021, previously serving in an interim capacity. He also serves as the president and CEO of the USC Health System. Hanners is responsible for oversight of the university’s clinical activities, including USC Care Medical Group; Keck Medical Center of USC, which includes two acute care hospitals: 401-licensed bed Keck Hospital of USC and 60-licensed bed USC Norris Cancer Hospital; USC Verdugo Hills Hospital, a 158-licensed bed community hospital; and more than 67 outpatient clinics from Bakersfield to Newport Beach and other clinical practices and joint ventures throughout Los Angeles and Orange counties.

As a seasoned health care executive, Hanners has a proven track record of driving clinical efficiencies and promoting a culture of trust and teamwork. Prior to stepping into this new role, Hanners served as chief operating officer for Keck Medicine of USC, as well as the CEO for Keck Medical Center of USC. In these roles, Hanners was responsible for the health system’s acute and ambulatory performance and worked with his executive team to advance quality, service, access, growth and financial performance.

During his tenure as COO, Keck Medicine has experienced tremendous success throughout its many health care facilities. Some recent accomplishments include Keck Medical Center of USC ranking No. 16 on the U.S. News & World Report 2019-20 Best Hospitals Honor Roll; Keck Medicine being named the official orthopaedic medical partner of the Los Angeles Kings hockey team; Keck Hospital of USC achieving Magnet designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center; and USC Verdugo Hills Hospital being recognized with the 2019 Lantern Award by the Emergency Nurses Association, becoming the only community hospital in Southern California to receive the honor.

Prior to joining Keck Medicine, Hanners served as senior vice president and chief operating officer for Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. Before that, Hanners held various positions in the Kaiser Permanente system, including the position of chief operating officer for Kaiser Permanente’s Los Angeles Medical Center.

Preceding his career in health care, Hanners served as a naval officer in the United States Submarine force, where he was selected as the Submarine Group 5 junior officer of the year. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from California State University, Long Beach, and a master’s equivalent degree in nuclear engineering from the U.S. Navy’s Nuclear Power School in Orlando, Florida.
