Stephen Sweeney

Professor Stephen Sweeney is currently the Professor of Photonics and Nanotechnology at the University of Glasgow, a position held since October 2022. Previously, Professor Sweeney served at the University of Surrey from March 2002, where roles included Professor of Physics, Head of the Department of Physics, and Head of Photonics, overseeing a substantial academic department and leading a research group focused on photonic materials and devices. As an EPSRC Leadership Fellow, Professor Sweeney contributed to the development of energy-efficient photonic and electronic components used in communication technologies. Additional affiliations include Director and CTO at ZiNIR Ltd., membership on various expert panels, and editorial roles in academic journals. Educational credentials include a PhD in Semiconductor Laser Physics from the University of Surrey and a BSc in Applied Physics from the University of Bath.
