Natalie Brown

Chair, Academic Senate at University of Tasmania

Professor Natalie Brown attended Howrah Primary, Clarence High and Elizabeth College and is a graduate of the University of Tasmania. She began her working life as a secondary science and math teacher, returning to study a PhD in Plant Science in 1995.

Natalie was appointed to the University of Tasmania in 2001 as a Lecturer in Science Education later becoming Director of the Bachelor of Teaching program. Since 2008, Natalie has held central learning and teaching roles as well as continuing to teach into both the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology. Her teaching has been recognised through a national teaching citation and a national Teaching Excellence award. Natalie's research interests encompass student engagement, teacher professional learning, STEM education and Technology Enhanced Learning and Teaching. She has supervised 12 research higher degree students to completion and been successful in both Australian Research Council and Office for Learning and Teaching competitive grant schemes.

In 2015 Natalie became Director of Academic Quality and the Tasmanian Institute of Learning and Teaching. She has made significant contributions in the areas of professional learning, teaching scholarship, assessment, curriculum and, technology enhanced teaching and learning at the University of Tasmania, and gained a national and international reputation in Higher Education learning and teaching.

In 2017, Natalie joined the Peter Underwood Centre as Director. The Centre's collaborative practice approach to working has facilitated innovative partnerships to tackle the important issue of raising educational attainment of all Tasmanians. For Natalie this appointment was a natural fit for a passionate advocate of learning, drawing upon her career of working and volunteering in education-related roles.

Natalie is a firm believer in lifelong learning and has recently graduated from the Australian Company Directors Course, as well as having completed Level 1 and 2 Executive coaching courses and the UTAS- Melbourne Business School Executive Leadership Program.

Natalie lives in Hobart and has three adult children, Tom, Nick and Julia.
