Carol A. Tamminga

Chair, Department of Psychiatry at UTSouthwestern Medical Center

Carol Tamminga, M.D., is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry, and Chief of Translational Neuroscience Research in Schizophrenia at UT Southwestern Medical School. She directs clinical and preclinical research in schizophrenia focused on identifying disease mechanisms and improving treatments. Dr. Tamminga graduated from Vanderbilt Medical School, completed a Psychiatry Residency at the University of Chicago, and spent many years at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center at the University of Maryland before moving to UT Southwestern Medical School to continue her research. Dr. Tamminga has received numerous federal and foundation grants and awards. She has served on the National Advisory Mental Health Council, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the Council of the National Institute of Drug Abuse. She was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 1998 and has served on several Institute of Medicine committees.
