Janée N. Burkhalter

Janée N. Burkhalter, PhD, brings a passion for social justice to her role as Associate Provost for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, along with 20 years of corporate, academic and administrative experience.

Dr. Burkhalter has been devoted to the University’s mission of being an inclusive and diverse community since her arrival to SJU in 2009. She is co-chair for SJU’s Day of Dialogue, co- facilitated a Multicultural Faculty Learning Community and shepherded the introduction of both Faculty and Staff Merit Awards for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. Dr. Burkhalter also led the drafting of the University’s Inclusive Excellence Blueprint and has facilitated training for faculty, staff and administrators on topics ranging from inclusive pedagogy to strategic hiring. She also served as SJU’s first Faculty Liaison for Inclusion & Diversity.

As a Professor of Marketing, Dr. Burkhalter teaches and researches at the intersection of entertainment, marketing strategy and social media with a particular interest in Black culture and identity. She has created and taught courses such as Multicultural Marketing, Fandom and Entertainment Marketing.

Dr. Burkhalter is the recipient of several awards including the Raymond A. Horn Scholar- Practitioner Award and Faculty Merit Awards for Justice, Service and Teaching. She serves on the Boards of Directors of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America Philadelphia/Delaware Valley Chapter and Dare to Imagine Church where she also volunteered as the church’s inaugural Director of Media & Communications.

Committed to continuous learning, Dr. Burkhalter has participated in the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program® Training, the Aspiring Leaders Program co-sponsored by the PhD Project and Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the Ignatian Colleagues Program sponsored by the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities.

Dr. Burkhalter holds her Ph.D. in Marketing from Georgia State University. She is also an alumna of Florida A&M University where she received both her bachelor’s degree (summa cum laude) and MBA.
