Beatrice Beck Shimmer

Director of University Medicine Zurich at University of Zurich

Prof. Dr. Beatrice Beck Schimmer studied human medicine at the University of Bern and habilitated in 2003 at the University of Zurich. From 2005 to 2018 she worked as a senior physician at the Institute for Anaesthesiology at the University Hospital Zurich. Since 2009 she has been a full professor of anesthesiology, where she works in basic, translational and clinical research.

Her research area includes the topic of organ protection through the use of volatile anesthetics on the one hand, and areas of nanomedicine on the other. She has obtained numerous competitive third-party funds for both research directions. From 2012 to 2018 she was a member of the Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and from 2016 to 2018 President of the Careers Committee with a seat on the Executive Committee of the SNSF. From 2017 to mid-2018, she also held the position of Vice Dean for Academic Promotion and Equal Opportunities in the Medical Faculty of the University of Zurich. Since 2011 she has been actively involved in promoting young talent, especially in career planning for women (mentoring program and career advancement program 'Filling the Gap' of the medical faculty).

As director of the University Medicine Zurich (UMZH), together with the dean and deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. She is responsible for the strategic further development of university medicine in the network of university, ETH and the four university hospitals. The aim is the optimal coordination of the tripartite research, teaching and supply at the Zurich location.
