Regional Program Director & One Health Technical Lead Usaid Uganda Health Activity at URC

Andrew Alyao Ocero PhD has extensive work experience in the field of health systems research and program management. Andrew currently holds the position of Regional Program Director & One Health Technical Lead at URC, a role they have held since February 2023. Previously, they served as the Regional Program Director at the same organization from February to July 2023. Prior to joining URC, Andrew worked as a Chief Of Party at the company from January 2018 to July 2023.

Before their time at URC, Andrew worked as a Senior Lecturer at Uganda Christian University for six months in 2017. Andrew also completed their PhD in Health Systems Research at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, where they focused on comparing health system performance in post-conflict and non-conflict settings in Northern Uganda.

Andrew has also worked at John Snow, Inc. (JSI) in various roles. Andrew served as a Consultant from July 2012 to January 2013 and as a Director from January 2009 to August 2012. Andrew also worked as an HIV Services Manager at JSI from January 2007 to November 2008.

In addition, Andrew has clinical experience as a Specialist Physician/Internist at Lira Regional Referral Hospital from June 2004 to January 2007. Andrew provided specialized care, technical support, and training to health service outlets in a post-conflict setting.

Andrew started their career as a Medical Officer at Lira District Hospital in 1993, where they worked until August 2001.

Dr. Andrew Alyao Ocero holds an extensive education history. Andrew began their academic journey at Makerere University, where they pursued a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree in General Clinical and Prevention Medicine. This foundational education took place from 1987 to 1992.

Building upon their bachelor's degree, Dr. Ocero pursued further specialization through the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Makerere University from 2001 to 2004, earning a Masters of Medicine (M.Med) degree. This program allowed him to deepen their knowledge and skills in the field of internal medicine.

Dr. Ocero's commitment to public health led him to pursue a Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degree with a specialization in Health Policy Analysis at the University of Limpopo. Andrew completed this program from 2006 to 2010, further enhancing their understanding of health systems and policies.

Driven by a strong passion for research, Dr. Ocero opted for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Health Systems Research from the prestigious Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. Andrew'sdoctoral studies took place from 2013 to 2016, providing him with advanced knowledge and expertise in their field.

To augment their skills in project management, Dr. Ocero pursued a Diploma in Project Management at the Uganda Management Institute from 2021 to 2022. This additional qualification further expanded their capabilities in overseeing and implementing projects effectively.

Overall, Dr. Andrew Alyao Ocero's educational journey has equipped him with a diverse and comprehensive background in both clinical medicine and public health research, enabling him to contribute effectively to the field.
