Sherman Lo

Dr. Lo has over 25 years of experience working in aviation navigation. He is currently a senior research engineer at the Stanford GPS Laboratory where his research focuses on navigation safety, security, and robustness. While at Stanford, he was an Associate Investigator for the FAA evaluation of Enhanced Loran and Alternative Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (APNT) systems for aviation. His research has spanned many security and robustness topics, including aviation navigation with terrestrial signals, GNSS spoof detection, UAV localization of GNSS jamming, and GNSS for railways and marine tracking. He has over 100 conferences, 20 journals, 14 magazine publications, and eight issued US patents. Sherman is dedicated to secure and well-thought use of navigation technologies. He has taught several classes at Stanford University and has presented at many invited seminars around the world.

Sherman co-founded two startups focused on navigation security and served as a technical advisor to several other navigation companies. He served on the Board of the International Loran Association; the Technical Advisory Board, of Crossrate Technology (now owned by UrsaNav); and the Editorial Advisory Board, The Journal of Navigation (Royal Institute of Navigation). For his work and efforts, he has received the Institute of Navigation (ION) Early Achievement Award (2005), the International Loran Association (ILA) President’s Award (2003) and Medal of Merit (2009), the Royal Institute of Navigation Michael Richey Medal best paper (2011), and the GPS World Leadership Award (2014).
