Wawa Gatheru is an accomplished environmental advocate and leader, currently serving as the Founder and Executive Director of Black Girl Environmentalist since January 2021. Wawa Gatheru holds the position of NRDC E2 1Hotels Fellow at the Natural Resources Defense Council and is a National Environmental Youth Advisory Council Member at the US Environmental Protection Agency, both roles commenced in late 2023. Additionally, Wawa Gatheru is a 776 Fellow at the 776 Foundation, where a $100,000 grant was awarded towards Black Girl Environmentalist under the mentorship of Alexis Ohanian. Involvement extends to advisory roles with Good Energy, Sound Future, and Climate Power, as well as council memberships with Earthjustice and EarthPercent. Wawa Gatheru’s educational background includes a Master of Science in Nature, Society, and Environmental Governance from the University of Oxford and a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies from the University of Connecticut.
