Poppy MacDonald has a long and varied career in the public and private sector. Poppy began their career in 1997 as a Press Secretary and Legislative Correspondent for US Senator Ron Wyden. In 1999, they became the Communications Director for U.S. Congressman Brian Baird in Washington. In 2001, they moved to the American Academy of Pediatrics as a Public Affairs employee. From 2002 to 2006, they worked at The Advisory Board Company as a Director. During this time, they also worked at Gallup as a Lead Partner/Partner and Chief Revenue Officer in their Healthcare Practice, where they led a team of seven partners and was responsible for meeting an annual revenue goal of $18 million. In 2010, they joined POLITICO as the Executive Director of POLITICO Pro. Poppy then moved to Atlantic Media in 2011, where they held the roles of President and Publisher of National Journal, Chief Revenue Officer, and Vice President of Membership. In 2016, they returned to POLITICO as the President of POLITICO USA, where they led the company's US operations and strategy. Finally, in 2018, they became the President of USAFacts. Currently, they are also a member of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO) Seattle chapter, where they serve on the Board as Chief Membership Officer and previously as Treasurer and Forum Moderator.

Poppy MacDonald attended Scripps College from 1993 to 1997, where they earned a Bachelor of Arts in History.
