Nicholas M. currently serves as the acting General Counsel at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) since 2025, following a tenure as Principal at McKool Smith from 2020 to 2025. Nicholas also held the position of acting General Counsel at USPTO in early 2020 and served as Senior Legal Advisor to the Under Secretary and Director from 2019 to 2020. Prior experience includes membership on the Council at the Administrative Conference of the United States from 2018 to 2020, and roles at the Office of Management and Budget as Deputy General Counsel (2017-2019) and as Special Assistant to the President at The White House in 2017. Nicholas began the legal career at Bancroft PLLC and Williams & Connolly LLP as an attorney and completed a law clerkship for the Honorable Richard C. Wesley at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Nicholas holds degrees from the University of Virginia School of Law and the University of Notre Dame.
