Jan Van Der Eijk is the current Vice Chairman at Utrecht University. Jan previously worked for Royal Dutch Shell from May 2004 to December 2009, where they served as the company's first-ever Chief Technology Officer. In this role, they were responsible for developing the company's technology strategy, managing a global external network of knowledge and technology providers, and identifying potential breakthrough technologies.
Van Der Eijk began their career with Shell in 1980 as a research scientist. Over the next 29 years, they held a variety of research, technology, and business management positions in the Netherlands, the UK, and the USA. In 2006, they were appointed as Shell's Group Chief Technology Officer with responsibility for the development of the company's technology strategy and its implementation through a technical organisation of 30,000 people with an annual R&D budget of more than $1 billion.

Jan Van Der Eijk received their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Physical Organic Chemistry from Utrecht University.
