Matthew Sunderland has extensive experience in avionics engineering and hardware development. Matthew is currently working as a Principal Avionics Engineer at Varda Space Industries since February 2023. Prior to this, Matthew worked at Anduril Industries as a Sr. Electrical Engineer from October 2019 to February 2023.

Matthew spent a significant portion of their career at SpaceX, where they held multiple roles. From April 2017 to September 2019, they served as the Hardware Development Manager, leading the embedded computing team responsible for supporting SpaceX's vehicles. Matthew also worked as the Lead Avionics Hardware Development Engineer from May 2013 to April 2017, leading the development of a telemetry system and contributing to the evolution of Falcon and Dragon computing architecture. Earlier in their career at SpaceX, Matthew was an Avionics Hardware Development Electrical Engineer from July 2010 to May 2013, working on various avionics components, including the Falcon 9 Flight Computer.

Matthew's earlier experiences include being a Graduate Student at The Pennsylvania State University from August 2008 to July 2010, and Avionics Intern positions at Space Exploration Technologies in 2009 and 2008. Matthew also had a research experience as an Undergraduates Student at Arecibo Observatory in 2007 and interned at General Electric in 2005.
