President and Chief Executive Officer at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) and Dean of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine
Dr. Balser has been the director of the company since 2018. Dr. Balser has served as president and CEO at VUMC since 2016 and as the Dean of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine since 2009. Under Dr. Balser’s leadership, VUMC doubled the outpatient visit volume to over 2.3 million, expanded the children’s hospital and the adult critical care beds. Prior to 2008, as VUMC’s chief research officer, Dr. Balser led a period of scientific expansion that moved the School of Medicine into the nation’s top 10 in National Institutes of Health funding. Dr. Balser earned his medical and PhD degrees from Vanderbilt University and completed his residency and fellowship training in anesthesiology and critical care medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from Tulane University. He became a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 2009 and serves on the organization’s governing Council.
