Katie Smith is a Type Approval Engineer at the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA), where work began in August 2020 after a position as a Graduate Type Approval Engineer. Prior experience includes a role as a Whole Vehicle Reliability Undergraduate Engineer at Bentley Motors Ltd, supporting the development of the Continental GTC and New Flying Spur, and various customer service positions in bar and retail environments. Katie has also engaged in educational experiences, including a teaching internship focused on delivering engineering topics to students aged 11-18 and research in Controlled Quantum Dynamics at Imperial College London. Katie holds a Master of Engineering degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Loughborough University, completed between 2015 and 2020.

We are an Executive Agency of the Department for Transport and exist to improve vehicle safety and environmental protection by providing robust testing and certification to internationally recognised standards. Designated by the Secretary of State to discharge their statutory responsibility for operating national and UNECE type approval schemes, we approve most categories of new vehicles from locations in the UK and overseas. We have also been designated to act as the UK authority for the certification of packaging and intermediate bulk containers used for the transport of dangerous goods.
