John Fankhauser has a diverse range of work experience in the healthcare industry. John started their career as a Full Time Family Medicine Faculty at Ventura Family Medicine Residency in 2002 and held this role until 2007. From 2007 to 2013, they served as the Hospital Chief Medical Officer at Ventura County Medical Center & Santa Paula Hospital, overseeing operations and spearheading various initiatives such as trauma center designation, palliative care program establishment, and the introduction of new programs. In 2013, they joined SIM International as the Director of Medical Mission, SIM Liberia, contributing to the recovery of Liberia from the Ebola epidemic. John then served as the Hospital Chief Executive Officer at ELWA Hospital from 2016 to 2018, before transitioning to the role of Chief Medical Officer at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for a brief period. In 2019, John Fankhauser became the CEO of Ventura County Medical Center & Santa Paula Hospital and also held the position of Chief Medical Officer at Ventura County Health Care Agency until their appointment as CEO.

John Fankhauser completed their Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Washington in 1984. John then went on to attend the University of Washington School of Medicine, where they earned their MD degree in Medicine between 1985 and 1989. Recently, from 2017 to 2019, they attended the University of Minnesota School of Public Health and obtained an MHA degree. Additionally, in 1980-1982, they studied Chemistry at George Fox University, without completing a degree.
