David Johnson has a diverse work experience spanning various roles and organizations. David is currently the Chief Research Officer at The Vernonburg Group since January 2021. Prior to this, they have held roles such as Adjunct Associate Professor and Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Town from 2015 to the present. David also worked as a Senior Researcher at Meraka Institute, CSIR from 2006 to 2008. Their early career experience includes working on sport telemetry at the African Advanced Institute for Information & Communication Technology, CSIR from 2000 to 2006. Overall, David Johnson has a strong background in research, academia, and technology policy with a particular focus on wireless networks and broadband policy in South Africa.
David Johnson attended Pretoria Boys High School from 1986 to 1990. David then enrolled at the University of Cape Town, where they earned a Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from 1991 to 1995. Following their undergraduate education, they pursued a Master's degree in Computer Engineering at the University of Pretoria/Universiteit van Pretoria, completing their studies from 2004 to 2007. David went on to attend UC Santa Barbara, where they obtained a Master's degree in Computer Science from 2008 to 2011, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in the same field of study from 2008 to 2012.
