Shiva Kumar Shanmukhappa

Shiva Kumar Shanmukhappa serves as a Senior Director and Senior Research Fellow at Vertex Pharmaceuticals since September 2019, providing strategic and scientific leadership in pathology endpoints for animal model development, nonclinical biomarker studies, and regulatory safety profiling. Prior experience includes roles as Director of Preclinical Safety Assessment at Vertex, Pathologist at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research, and Assistant Professor of Pathology at both the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Educational credentials include a Ph.D. in Veterinary Pathology and Pathobiology from Kansas State University, a Master's in Veterinary Virology & Immunology from the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, and a Bachelor's in Veterinary Science from the University of Agricultural Sciences in Bangalore. Training at Harvard Medical School included a residency in Veterinary Pathology, focusing on metabolic complications of HIV/AIDS.
