Walter Clover is a founding member and Senior Director of the Software Development & Applications Group of Verus Research (formerly XL Scientific, LLC). He leads research and development (R&D) in modeling & simulation architectures, directed energy weapons engagement, computational electromagnetics, and embedded systems and controls.
Using an agile software development process, Walter’s teams have created cross-platform software (using Qt/C++, Java, JavaScript, Python, Perl, etc.) with applications from hardware interfacing and control to simulation tools to dynamic graphical user interfaces (GUIs) to visualization of complex geometry and simulation output using advanced visualization tools. In addition to his senior director role, Mr. Clover is a software developer and configuration manager, employing his expertise in software development tools in multiple development environments, build systems, version control systems, bug tracking, and team collaboration.
Before joining Verus Research, Walter was a Program Manager at Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) and later TechFlow Scientific, during which he led the development of high-power microwave (HPM) modeling, simulation, and analysis tools centered around the Joint Radio-frequency Effectiveness Model (JREM) and the Directed Energy High Performance Computing Software Applications Institute (DE HSAI) software suite. He also supported the integration of HPM weapon models into the Endgame Framework for the Integrated Weapon Environment for Analysis (IWEA) program and the introduction of HPM weapon models into weaponeering systems through prototype tool development.
Walter started his career as a Software Engineer at Mission Research Corporation (MRC), which later became part of Alliant Techsystems (ATK). Walter has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of New Mexico (UNM). He has authored many technical publications, including software user manuals and technical reports on software verification and validation (V&V) and the application of simulation to R&D programs.
