Debra Aroko

Program Coordinator, Solutions Storytelling Project, The Video Consortium at Video Consortium

Debra has been working in film since the age of 19 but her passion for storytelling goes back longer than that. As is the case with many other filmmakers, her journey through the industry has been rather unconventional. It all began with her assisting on the sets of small independent short films which led to her writing and producing a feature length documentary a few years later. She believes that storytelling is a powerful tool that can be used to change minds which in turn changes lives. She has now fully immersed herself into the world of documentary filmmaking and is determined to not only tell meaningful stories, but to also make sure that those stories have meaningful impact on both the communities that they are from as well as the audiences that they reach. Debra would also like you to know that she has recently discovered the wonderful world of sound design and as she continues to develop what she calls a "niche and expensive" hobby; she hopes that it will blossom into a another wonderful tool that can contribute to her storytelling.
