Skokie was the first community in the entire United States to have nationally accredited Fire, Police and Public Works Departments.

Police Department
The Skokie Police Department is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), a credential it has held since 1988.

Fire Department
The Skokie Fire Department holds both a Class 1 rating from the Insurance Services Office (ISO), an independent organization used by the insurance industry to rate fire fighting capability, and full accreditation from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International.

Public Works
In 2003 the Public Works Department achieved accreditation from the American Public Works Association, giving Skokie its status as the first town in the country to achieve this level of professional accreditation.

Health Department
In addition, the Skokie Health Department is only one of seven state-certified municipal health departments in Illinois and provides a wide range of services to Skokie residents.

The Public Safety Team at the Village of Skokie ensures the well-being and security of its residents through a range of specialized roles. The Risk Manager mitigates potential municipal risks and enhances safety protocols; the Environmental Health Officer oversees public health and safety standards; firefighters and firefighter/paramedics respond to emergencies and provide medical assistance; the Fire Plans Examiner Fire Inspector ensures fire code compliance and safety in buildings; and School Crossing Guards, like the one at East Prairie School, protect children as they travel to and from school. Together, they form a cohesive unit dedicated to maintaining and improving public safety in the community.
