Courtney Freeman

Interim Deputy Director for Conservation & Collections at Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

Courtney Freeman joined the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts as Interim Deputy Director for Conservation and Collections in 2022. This is a new role for Freeman who had previously worked at the museum from 2013 to 2019, before taking a position with the M+ Museum in Hong Kong, during its last two years of development. There, she led the Exhibitions and Displays team through the final phases of construction and installation, as well as the museum’s opening in 2021. During her first tenure at VMFA, Freeman was the Director of Exhibition Planning from 2016 to 2019. Her professional experience includes nearly 20 years in the museum sector. She holds a master’s degree in art gallery and museum studies from the University of Manchester, England, and a bachelor’s in art history from Virginia Commonwealth University. She completed the Getty Leadership Institute program in 2018.
