Mike Smith has an extensive work experience spanning over several companies. Mike started their career in 1985 at Harris Corp. as a Project Engineer and Design Engineer, where they worked until 1997. From 1997 to 1998, they were a Member Technical Staff at Viasat, Inc. Mike then joined Filtronic Solid State and held the positions of Engineering Manager for Military Components and Director of Semiconductor Programs. In 2002, they became the Production Engineering Manager at Zeevo Inc. and later moved to Harris GCSD in 2004, where they worked as a Systems Engineer and led SDR Product and Technology Development for Airborne embedded communications systems. In 2016, they became the Co-Proprietor of Inn The Park Bed and Breakfast Inn. Since 2015, they have been working at Virginia Tech Applied Research Corporation, first as a Wireless Communications Senior Systems Engineer and currently as a Principal Systems Engineer. In this role, they support the Department of Defense in various areas, including wireless network communications, spectrum management, spectrum sharing, dynamic spectrum access, and cognitive radio. Additionally, they provide systems engineering support for 5G network optimization for Smart Warehouse applications and contributes to the development of division strategic priorities.

Mike Smith attended Virginia Tech from 1978 to 1985, where they pursued a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
