Hans Henrik Thodberg

Founder, CEO at Visiana

Hans Henrik Thodberg is a seasoned professional with extensive experience in medical image analysis and advanced technology applications. As the founder and CEO of Visiana since January 2004, Thodberg has developed BoneXpert, a pioneering method for automated bone age determination from digital hand radiographs. Previous roles include Principal Scientist at Novo Nordisk, focusing on decision support systems in diabetes care, and Associate Professor at the Technical University of Denmark, teaching advanced image analysis. Thodberg held the position of R&D Director at Pronosco A/S during the dot-com bubble and managed projects involving neural networks at the Danish Meat Research Institute. Early career experiences include development work at Computer Resources International and a fellowship at CERN in high energy physics. Thodberg earned a PhD in Physics from the University of Copenhagen.

Visiana

Visiana helps radiology departments achieve automation through machine learning and medical imaging technologies. A routine task in radiology is the examination and interpretation of hand X-rays to determine the skeletal maturity (i.e. bone age) of a child or the bone health. This is a time-consuming task, prone to considerable inter- and intra-rater variability. Our main product, BoneXpert replaces the cumbersome use of a radiographic atlas with an automated and quantitative solution. BoneXpert, is a vendor-neutral CAD technology that measures bone age and bone health measurement. BoneXpert is integrated with PACS for an optimal workflow and improves the accuracy of these measurements while saving radiographers’ and radiologists’ time and providing results and interpretation to the requesting clinician immediately after the X-ray is recorded. BoneXpert measures - the bone age, expressing the skeletal maturity - the Bone Health Index (BHI), expressing the bone mass in the metacarpals - standard deviation scores from modern reference data Bone age is used by paediatric endocrinologists to assess the growth and maturation of children and adolescents. Bone age is an important diagnostic finding in determining growth hormone deficiency, requiring expensive long-term hormone replacement therapy. Other conditions include early or late puberty due to various other disorders such as precocious puberty, Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH), Turner syndrome and Klinefelter syndrome. Bone age is often utilised for adult height prediction. We have developed a new method which outperforms the traditional methods from the 1950s, freely accessible at www.BoneXpert.com/ahp.
