Kevin Ta

Software Developer | Onboard Systems & Calibration at Waabi

Kevin Ta has a diverse range of work experience, starting with their role as a Solar Predictive Analytics and Modeling Intern at Schneider Electric in 2018. Here, they implemented ML-based anomaly detection algorithms and developed thermal model algorithms for utility-scale solar inverters.

In 2019, Kevin took on several roles including being an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant for UBC Mechanical Engineering, where they instructed and provided feedback to second-year students in thermodynamics and fluid dynamics lab experiments. Kevin also worked as a Mechatronics Research Assistant at the UBC Collaborative Advanced Robotics and Intelligent Systems Lab, where they developed ML pipelines for terrain classification and user intention detection for power-assisted wheelchairs.

In the same year, Kevin co-founded Attentiv Medical and served as a Mechatronics Engineer. Kevin explored the problem of IV infiltration in neonatal populations and conceptualized a sensor-embedded catheter. Their work was recognized with several awards including the 2021 MDDC Biomedical Engineering Design Competition and the 2020 James Dyson Award.

Kevin's work experience also includes a role as a Research Assistant at the ETH Zürich Neural Control of Movement Lab, where they prototyped a VR headset environment for mental performance training. Kevin also worked as a Sensor Calibration Intern at Cruise in 2021, where they developed high-accuracy calibrations and signal processing for next-generation perception sensors.

Most recently, Kevin joined the Computer Vision Lab ETH Zürich as a Master Thesis student in 2022. Their work involved fully calibrating a perception sensor stack and investigating the use of uncertainty in deep multi-sensor neural implicit representations for dense scene reconstruction and localization. Kevin is currently a Software Developer at Waabi, starting in 2023.

Kevin Ta earned a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from The University of British Columbia, where they studied from 2014 to 2020. Following this, they pursued a Master of Science degree in Robotics, Systems, and Control at ETH Zürich from 2020 to 2022.

In terms of additional certifications, Kevin received the Certified SolidWorks Associate certification from Solidworks in January 2016. In January 2022, they obtained certifications in C++ Design Patterns: Creational, C++: Advanced Topics, and Data Ingestion with Python from LinkedIn. Additionally, they completed the C++ For C Programmers, Part A certification from Coursera in December 2021.
