Michiel van Diepen

Michiel van Diepen is a seasoned scientist specializing in protein engineering and virology. Currently serving as a Research and Development Scientist at Watchmaker Genomics since March 2021, Michiel focuses on evolving improved enzymes for next-generation sequencing applications. Previously, from November 2014 to March 2021, Michiel held the position of Senior Scientist at the University of Cape Town, leading a team in the Virology Department on novel HIV-1 vaccine development. Experience at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research as a Lab Head involved molecular and cellular biology related to lung regeneration, and earlier roles at King's College London and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam contributed to significant research on neuronal interactions and gene characterization. Michiel obtained a PhD in Medical Virology from the University of Cape Town and a Master's degree in Biology from the University of Amsterdam.
