Powderly began their career as a Director of Budgeting and Cash Management at United Way Worldwide. There they were responsible for coordinating and reporting on the annual budget, preparing monthly reports of actual spending vs. budget, analyzing variances, preparing forecasts, and providing granular spending and budget reports to meet the needs of the business areas. Karen was also responsible for cash management, including cash forecasting, investing, and reporting to subcommittees. In addition, Powderly provided financial analysis to management to assist with business case decision making and supported restricted grant tracking and reporting.
In July 2015, Powderly took on the role of Manager of Budget Management and Analysis at Children's Health. In this role, they assisted with consolidation and reporting of the $3B annual budget across 600+ business units. Karen partnered with business units to prepare annual budgets using Kaufman Hall Budget Advisor and created an automated Flex Budget flash report by cost center that was rolled out across all business units. Karen also developed an operating budget for a multi-site acquisition with $65M annual revenue and managed a staff of 2 financial analysts.
