Munawar Hassan

Project Manager Strategic Change at WaterAid

Munawar Hassan has extensive work experience in the water and sanitation sector, particularly with WaterAid. Munawar began their career in 1999 as a Social Scientist with the International Water Management Institute, where they played a vital role in mobilizing rural communities for the Participatory Irrigation Management Programme in Sindh.

In 2001, Munawar worked as a Research Associate at the Institute for Educational Development, where they contributed to various research projects and studies related to education. Munawar then joined the Aga Khan University as a Senior Research Associate in 2005, continuing their work in educational research.

Munawar's career path took a turn in 2007 when they joined ActionAid Pakistan as an Impact Assessment & Shared Learning Officer. Munawar worked there until 2009, gaining experience in impact assessment and promoting shared learning.

In 2009, Munawar joined WaterAid Pakistan as a Programme Manager, overseeing project implementation and management. Munawar later advanced to become the Manager of Programme Quality and Fundraising, where they led the development of country programme strategies, managed partnerships, and ensured overall programme quality.

Munawar's expertise and leadership skills led him to be appointed as the Programmes Director (Secondment) at WaterAid from April to September 2017. During this period, they provided strategic leadership and guidance for programme development.

In 2018, Munawar joined WaterAid Myanmar as the Head of Programmes and Policy. In this leadership role, they were responsible for developing and implementing the country's strategic plan, engaging with government stakeholders, designing and implementing community-based WASH projects, and managing partnerships and external relations.

After their stint in WaterAid Myanmar, Munawar returned to WaterAid Pakistan as the Head of Programmes. In this position, they contributed to the design and development of the country programme, implemented the PMER system, developed partnerships, and managed resources.

Most recently, Munawar Hassan joined WaterAid as a Strategic Change Project Manager in 2022. In this role, they are involved in managing strategic change projects for the organization.

Throughout their career, Munawar has demonstrated a strong commitment to improving water and sanitation access, developing strategic plans, managing projects and partnerships, and ensuring programme quality.

Munawar Hassan pursued a B.E. in Agricultural Engineering from Sindh Agriculture University, Tando Jam, from 1989 to 1994. Later on, they completed an MA in International Development from the University of London from 2004 to 2006.
