Ellen Hughes

Mrs. Hughes graduated from Waterloo High School (never mind how many years ago!) and went on to SUNY Oswego where she received her degree in Secondary Education Spanish. During her time at Oswego she spent her junior year at the University of Madrid, Spain. After graduation, she married and had a son and daughter. Instead of teaching, she stayed home with them and also cared for other children in her home.

When her children were both in school full time, she returned to school at Nazareth College and received her Master Degree in Elementary Education. She began teaching, needless to say, at a much later age than many others. She taught 3rd grade at Border City School for one year and then Spanish at Waterloo High School for 26 years. She loves and loved teaching! However, there comes a time to retire and retired in 2012. It had always been her goal to retire while she was still good at it and before people asked her when she would leave.

In her retirement, she enjoys her two granddaughters and she is in such organizations as Waterloo Rotary (where I met and married my second husband), Phi Beta Psi (a sorority that supports cancer research), Delta Kappa Gamma ( a sorority for women educators), the Catholic Daughters of America, the Celebrate-Commemorate Committee, Seneca County Retired Teachers and the New York State Retired Teachers Association. She volunteers at St. Francis and St. Clare Parish as the co-chair of the summer festival, Trevor's Gift Backpack Program, the Community Christmas Project and the Cayuga-Seneca Community Action Program....and as a member of the Waterloo Board of Education where I am able to continue my passion for quality education.
