Jeewan Chanicka

Jeewan Chanicka has a diverse and extensive work experience. jeewan is currently the Director of Education at the Waterloo Region District School Board, a position they started in September 2021. Previously, they worked as a Consultant & Lecturer at 3E Consulting, focusing on equity, anti-racism, and mediation.

From 2002 to 2021, Chanicka held various roles in multiple agencies and schools. These roles included Curriculum Developer, Management, and Implementation, where they focused on inclusive design and supporting marginalized and minoritized students in the public education system. jeewan also worked on equity course design and development, curriculum development and instruction at Centennial College, and integrated curriculum development based on social justice and global citizenship.

Before joining the Waterloo Region District School Board, Chanicka was the Superintendent/CEO at Next Generation School from September 2019 to August 2021. Prior to that, they served as a Superintendent for Equity, Anti-Racism & Anti-Oppression & Learning Network 28 and as the Central Coordinating Principal for Equity and Achievement at the Toronto District School Board in 2017.

In 2015, Chanicka worked as an Education Officer at the Ontario Ministry of Education, where they focused on inclusive design, policy implementation, and reducing achievement gaps for underserved students. jeewan has also been involved in speaking engagements, workshops, and served as a principal at Aldergrove Public School in the York Region District School Board.

Throughout their career, Chanicka has demonstrated a commitment to equity, inclusion, and improving educational outcomes for marginalized students.

Jeewan Chanicka obtained a Bachelor of Arts with honors (magna cum laude) in Negotiations & Bargaining: Culturally Appropriate forms of Mediation from York University from 1995 to 2000. Subsequently, they completed their Bachelor of Education in Junior/Intermediate History at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto from 2002 to 2003. jeewan then pursued a Master of Education in Risk & Resiliency; Educational Leadership; Equity Issues; Curriculum Development from York University from 2005 to 2007. Additionally, Jeewan Chanicka has a certification in Workplace Diversity and Human Rights from the Ontario Human Rights Commission.
