Steve Coe has a diverse work experience. Steve began their career in 1988 as a Private Recruit in the Canadian Armed Forces and eventually rose to the position of Commanding Officer - Royal Highland Fusiliers of Canada (RHFC). Steve also served as the Regimental Major and Deputy Commanding Officer for RHFC. In addition, they held various roles in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada and the Waterloo Region District School Board, where they worked as an Elementary Teacher and Administrator, Vice Principal, and Acting Vice Principal.

Steve Coe earned a Bachelor of Arts in Geography from McMaster University in 1989. In 1993, they obtained a Graduate Diploma in Education with a focus on Primary and Junior Division from Australian Catholic University. In 1999, they completed Specialist Qualifications in Computers in the Classroom from various universities. Steve also completed Specialist Qualifications in Behaviour and Special Education from various universities in 1998. In 2004, they finished the Principal Qualifications Course Part 1 and 2, specializing in Educational Leadership from the Ontario Principal's Council. Steve Coe attended the Canadian Army Command and Staff College in 2008-2009, completing the Army Operations Course. From 2015 to 2017, they participated in the Joint Command and Staff Programme (JCSP) with a focus on Advanced Joint Warfare Studies at the Canadian Forces College in Toronto, ON. Lastly, in 2017, they obtained a Master of Defence Studies degree from the Royal Military College of Canada/Collège militaire royal du Canada. Additionally, they earned a certification in Introduction to Gender Based Analysis + from Status of Women Canada in 2017.
