Jeremy Cottrell

General Counsel & Corporate Secretary at Westmoreland Mining

Jeremy has over 15 years’ experience working in legal roles associated with the natural resources industry. Jeremy started his career at the Legislative Advocacy for the Colorado Trade Association, advancing and safeguarding interests provided by way of State and Federal legislation for client members. Following that, Jeremy worked for the State of Colorado implementing legislation and legally defensible programs to enact legislation passed by the Colorado General Assembly.

After graduating from the University of Kansas, Jeremy moved to Colorado to attend Law School at the University of Denver, focusing on Natural Resources and Corporate Law.

Jeremy has worked in various capacities in his tenure in the natural resources industry, including advisement on real property matters, acquisitions and divestitures, employment conditions, Union relations, collective bargaining agreements, regulatory, legislative and environmental laws.

Jeremy joined Westmoreland as an Associate General Counsel in 2015 and was recently promoted to General Counsel and Corporate Secretary to oversee the Group’s entire legal requirements and responsibilities, in both the US and Canada. In his current role as General Counsel and Company Secretary, Jeremy directly supports the CEO, Executive team, and the Board of Directors in relation to legal, legislative, land and corporate governance matters.
