William Burns has a diverse work experience spanning across various companies and roles. William started their career at the University of Ulster as a Project Assistant and later worked as a Research Assistant and Part-Time Lecturer. William then served as a Research Associate in different periods and concluded their time at the University as a Research Fellow. Following this, they joined Allstate Northern Ireland as an Application Developer (R&D) before moving on to become a Machine Learning Consultant and an Innovation R&D Engineer. William then transitioned to BT as a Disruptive Technology Specialist. Currently, they are working at Whitespace as a Solutions Architect.

William Burns completed their education with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Computer Science from Ulster University from 2008 to 2015. Prior to that, they obtained a BSc in Interactive Multimedia Design from Ulster University from 2003 to 2007. Their earlier education includes attending St Malachy's College from 1996 to 2001, although no degree or field of study is specified for this period. Additionally, they have acquired certifications such as being an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy from the Higher Education Academy in June 2014, and an Associate Member of the British Computing Society from BCS in June 2013.
