Ling Zhu has a diverse and extensive work experience. Ling began their career as a consultant for the British Gas Pipeline Impact Risk Assessment Project at the University of Liverpool in 1990. Ling then served as an ICI Research Fellow at the University of Reading from 1990 to 1993, working on the ICI Strategic Research Funding Project on Composite Strength. From 1993 to 1995, Ling worked as a Project Coordinator for SERC/MTD, Royal Society, Yarrow/ABS Sponsored Project at the University of Glasgow.
In 1995, Ling joined Lloyd's Register as a Lead Specialist - Rules and Project Manager, where they remained for 18 years until 2013. During their time at Lloyd's Register, they held various leadership roles and managed projects in rules and regulations.
Since 2013, Ling has been associated with Wuhan University of Technology (WHUT). Ling started as a Professor and Director of the Green Ship and Marine Engineering Equipment Technology Research Centre, leading research on design of green ships and intelligent manufacture of shipbuilding components. Ling also established the Impact and Fluid-Structure Interaction Laboratory. In 2014, they became the Dean of the School of Transportation, where they formulated development strategies, promoted discipline development and internationalization, and managed overall school operations. In July 2020, Ling was appointed as the Professor and Director of the Research Institute at WHUT, furthering their research and innovation work.
Ling Zhu obtained a Ph.D. in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering from the University of Glasgow between 1988 and 1990. The degree focused on the dynamic inelastic behavior of ship plates during collisions.
