Dr. Grace Young

Dr. Grace Young has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of ocean research and engineering. Dr. Grace currently serves as a Senior Product & Research Engineer at X, the moonshot factory, where they are part of the Tidal team working on breakthrough technology to protect the ocean. Dr. Grace previously held the position of Research Engineer at X, focusing on prototyping technologies for ocean health. Prior to X, they worked as an AI Resident and Software Engineering Intern.

Dr. Young is also involved in global initiatives related to ocean conservation, serving as a Liaison to the U.S. National Committee on the Ocean Decade at UN Ocean Decade. Additionally, they have been recognized as a National Geographic Explorer, collaborating on various educational programs, publications, and documentaries.

In terms of academic background, Dr. Young earned their PhD from the University of Oxford, where their research combined engineering, computer vision, machine learning, and marine science. Dr. Grace also conducted research at NASA Ames Research Center on computer vision and artificial intelligence. Before that, they worked at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution as a Research Assistant, specializing in underwater cameras and 3D reconstructions.

Dr. Young's work experience also includes positions as a Science Ambassador and Chief Scientist at Pisces VI Submarine SL, where they were involved in the development and accessibility of deep-sea research technology. Dr. Grace has also contributed to projects at Fabien Cousteau's Mission 31 and NOAA, where they worked on underwater experiments and robotic systems for fish population surveys.

Dr. Grace Young began their education at the University of Maryland in 2009 where they studied Math and Physics for one year. Dr. Grace then transferred to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and completed their Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Mechanical and Ocean Engineering from 2010 to 2014. Following this, they pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Engineering and Marine Science at the University of Oxford from 2014 to 2017. In addition to their academic achievements, Dr. Young holds certifications as a Divemaster from PADI and as a Rebreather (Hollis PRISM 2) from IANTD.
