Alexander Thal

Alexander Thal has a diverse work experience in engineering roles. Alexander currently works at Zipline as a Lead Field System Engineer since October 2022. Prior to this, they held the position of Field Systems Engineer at Zipline from January 2022 to October 2022.

Before joining Zipline, Alexander worked at Google for several years. Alexander started as a Mechanical and Test Engineer at Project Loon, Google [X] (contractor) from July 2015 to December 2016. In this role, they tested automated balloon launching equipment, improved designs, developed operating procedures, and contributed to wind characterization efforts.

After that, Alexander became a Program Manager/Mechanical Engineer at Loon, where they managed the automation test and commissioning team. Alexander successfully led the commissioning of a major upgrade to the "Portable Launch Rig" (PLR) and was part of the design committee for next-generation automation launch equipment. Alexander held this role from December 2016 to December 2021.

Before Google, Alexander worked as a Mechanical Engineer at InCube Labs from June 2013 to July 2015. Alexander designed various mechanical components and fixtures, conducted tests and experiments, and developed test procedures for different medical devices.

During their early career, Alexander worked as a Mechanical Engineering Intern at MIOX Corporation from 2009 to 2012. Alexander conducted experiments, created AutoCAD schematics, and gained experience in water treatment technology.

Alexander also had a High School Summer Internship at the Biomedical Center of the University of New Mexico in 2008 and 2009.

Alexander Thal began their education in 2010 at Carnegie Mellon University, where they studied Mechanical Engineering until 2012. After that, they attended the University of Santa Clara from 2012 to 2014, continuing their studies in Mechanical Engineering. In 2011, they spent a year at UNSW, also focusing on Mechanical Engineering.
