Accenture CEO Julie Sweet will succeed Executive Chairman David Rowland on September 1 and take on the position as the Chair of the consulting firm’s Board of Directors.

The move bring’s Rowland’s 38-year career with the company to a close. He initially joined Accenture in 1983 and has served in a variety of roles including CFO as well as a stint as interim CEO when former CEO Pierre Nanterme passed away.

Sweet’s new role comes nearly two years after she took over the CEO position from Rowland in September 2019.

In a press release, Accenture’s independent lead director, Gilles Pélisson, said Sweet’s appointment reflects her “exceptional track record as a senior leader for more than a decade.” Pélisson added, “In less than two years as CEO, she established our new growth model and led the company through the COVID-19 global pandemic while strengthening commitments to sustainability and equality for all and creating significant value for our clients and shareholders.”

Sweet has been with Accenture since 2010, when she left her position as a Partner at law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore. Since joining the company she has served as the consulting giant’s General Counsel, Secretary, and Chief Compliance Officer. She also oversaw the company’s largest geographic market as the CEO of Accenture’s business in North America.

“I want to thank David for his numerous contributions to Accenture over four decades, and for his extraordinary stewardship — he has inspired generations of leaders with his focus on always looking to the future, building a better Accenture for all, and solving for our clients, people and communities.” Sweet stated. “We have benefitted from his experience and perspective through his service as executive chairman over the last two years, and I am honored to succeed him.”
