Clubhouse pulls Spotify PR exec Grey Munford to lead global communications. His hire comes days before Clubhouse closed an undisclosed Series C fundraising round valuing the company at an estimated $4 billion.
Grey Munford, Head of Content Communications at Spotify, joined the Clubhouse team this week as Global Head of Communications.
In an email sent last Friday obtained by Variety, Munford said “Following a wildly exciting and wonderful few years at Spotify I am packing up my virtual office (read: logging out of my company gmail) and heading down the (still virtual) road to join the team at Clubhouse.”
His move came days before Clubhouse revealed it closed a Series C fundraising round led by repeat investor Andrew Chen of Andreessen Horowitz on Sunday. Unusually, the company has not disclosed the amount of money raised, though it reportedly values the company at $4 billion.
Munford’s move from Spotify comes on the heels of his previous employer starting its own Clubhouse competitor. Last month, Spotify announced its acquisition of Betty Labs, the creators of the live-audio app Locker Room, and said it plans to launch a range of new audio programming in the next few months. Several other competitors have popped up in the year since it launched, including Twitter Spaces and now Facebook, which announced its plans to create a string of new audio products on Monday.
At Spotify, Munford oversaw public relations for music, podcasting, and advertising. He worked on several high-profile announcements for the audio app, including partnerships with Barack and Michelle Obama, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and Joe Rogan.
Before joining the PR team at Spotify, Munford worked for over eight years at CBS, most recently as SVP of Communications and Digital Marketing.
Clubhouse has been rapidly expanding in size and is recruiting execs from all over the tech industry. Last week, the company hired Nick Kaufman from TikTok to lead its programming and trending teams, and in March, music industry veteran Fadia Kader left Instagram to become Head of Media Partnerships.
