Headspace has revealed that Val Kaplan Zapata is joining the company as its new Chief Marketing Officer in April 2021. She will join the company’s senior leadership team and report to CEO CeCe Morken.

In her role as the meditation and mindfulness platform’s top marketer, Zapata will lead a cross-functional marketing team with shared responsibility for user acquisition, conversion, and retention.

“As a vital member of the executive team, Val will drive our vision, strategies, and brand forward while ensuring our offerings deliver on Headspace's mission to improve the health and happiness of the world,” CeCe Morken stated in a press release.

To do so, Zapata will lean on her most recent experience as the VP of Growth Marketing at Disney-owned streaming titan Hulu. There she helped drive record-breaking subscriber growth for the streaming service, more than doubling its subscriber base in just under three years. Prior to Hulu, the Harvard Business School and Duke University graduate built the business development function at e-commerce mattress company Helix Sleep and worked on market operations and monetization at Instagram.

I am thrilled and privileged to be joining the talented team at Headspace,” Zapata said. “At this moment in time, I can’t think of a more powerful mission than spreading health and happiness to all. I look forward to helping a growing member base create healthy wellness routines that last a lifetime.”

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic meditation and mindfulness apps like Headspace saw a surge in downloads and consumers and employers searched for ways to safeguard mental health concerns. This trend hasn’t died down and just earlier this month Headspace signed a deal with Swedish telecommunications equipment giant Ericsson to provide all-access subscriptions to its employees.
