Oscar Health has hired veteran healthcare executive Ranmali Bopitiya as its new Chief Legal Officer to help guide its expansion into new markets.
Bopitiya officially begins her role at the digital health insurance company at the end of January and will report directly to CEO Mario Schlosser.
Before accepting the top role in Oscar’s legal organization, Bopitiya was the Chief Legal Officer at Everside Health. She also served as General Counsel for Kaiser Permanente’s Colorado Permanente Medical Group and led the legal team at Stanford Health Care.
“Having spent close to two decades in healthcare, Ranmali brings a depth of experience that will support our work at Oscar as we continue to grow and innovate,” Schlosser said in the company’s press release.
Oscar plans to expand the reach of its health insurance plans in 2022 and launch services in Arkansas, Illinois, Nebraska, and 146 new counties in existing markets during the upcoming open enrollment period. This expansion would give Oscar a footprint in 22 states and 607 counties.
Bopitiya is set to be a central figure in Oscar’s expansion as she will likely spearhead the legal research that allows Oscar to learn a state’s regulatory topography and stay compliant with the patchwork of local regulations. This knowledge enables Oscar to prioritize its expansion targets and smoothly enter new markets as it sizes up the 28 remaining US states.
“I am thrilled to be joining Oscar during such a pivotal time for healthcare. Their focus on leveraging technology to drive better outcomes and experiences for their members is as exciting as it is critical,” Bopitiya stated. “I look forward to bringing my expertise and passion to Oscar’s mission of making healthcare more accessible and affordable for all.”
