Ukraine’s tech industry has been one of the fastest-growing in the country. In fact, IT talent is the country’s second-largest export. As a result, it’s unsurprising that Ukraine is the home to some of the most well-known founders and tech companies in the world today.

As the war in Ukraine intensifies, The Org wanted to draw attention to the impact that Ukrainians have made in the tech community worldwide by highlighting some of the country’s most widely used technologies and growing startups.

The big players

Dmitriy Zaporozhets co-founded GitLab, the open-source software project management tool, in 2011. He served as its CTO and later an engineering fellow at the company for 10 years before stepping down. Zaporozhets is still based in Ukraine and has publicly denounced Russia’s invasion of his home country.

One of the most well-known companies founded by a Ukrainian entrepreneur is WhatsApp. The instant messenger application that is now being used by over 2 billion people worldwide was founded by Jan Koum, who was born and raised in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Max Levchin is one of the founders of well-known payment giant, PayPal. After selling the company to eBay in 2002, Levin co-founded Affirm, a fintech company that helps its users pay in installments. The company went public on January 12 last year and is currently valued at over $24 billion.

Grammarly was born to Ukrainian-Americans Max Lytvyn and Alex Shevchenko in 2009. The application uses AI technology to help its users review their writing style and correct grammar and punctuation. The company has publicly announced that it will donate $5 million to funds and organizations in support of Ukraine and has suspended services in Russia and Belarus.

Revolut, a financial superapp that offers money transfers worldwide, was founded by British-Ukrainian Vlad Yatsenko and Russian-born Nikolay Storonsky. Storonsky made a public announcement on the company’s website denouncing the war and made a commitment that every donation to Red Cross Ukraine will be matched by Revolut.

Unicorn enterprise revenue company has a valuation of $1.1 billion, and was founded by Ukrainian-born Oleg Rogynskyy. Rogynskyy has commended President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for stepping up as a leader in midst of a crisis and shared his distraught during unpredictable times.

“Today, I cried. I cried when my childhood friend, a doctor & entrepreneur, and now a combat medic in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, sent me a selfie from the front lines in Eastern Ukraine. He was smiling in the picture but then he wrote “don’t forget about me. And please find and take care of my daughter once this is over,” Rogynskyy wrote in a post on LinkedIn.
