David Collins, PhD

David Collins, PhD has worked in various roles since 2013. From 2013 to 2015, they were an Honorary Research Fellow and PhD Researcher at the University of Liverpool. During this time, they used medical imaging, multibody dynamic analysis (MDA) and finite element analysis (FEA) to investigate how current methodological approaches used to interpret the fossil record may influence analyses of bite forces and skull morphology in extinct taxa. David also worked on describing trabecular bone micro-structural arrangement, as well as the underlying mechanisms of fracture, in the ageing human femur. In 2015, they were a Visiting PhD Student at The University of Sheffield, where they undertook a placement within the academic unit of bone metabolism (AUBM). In 2018, they became a Biomedical Engineer at 3D LifePrints, managing their embedded 3D printing facility at Alder Hey Children's Hospital and creating patient specific medical devices, at the point of care, across a broad spectrum of surgical disciplines for pre- & intra-surgical use. David also managed relationships with other key clients and institutions in the USA, with a special focus on the Texas Medical Centre. In 2021, they became a Visiting Researcher at Houston Methodist, where they are immersed in a healthcare research capacity within the DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center of Excellence (specifically the Cardiovascular Research program). David is assisting with R&D activities towards understanding cardiovascular disease progression & enhancing patient outcomes via more effective pre-surgical planning strategies, as well as participating in on-campus surgical planning R&D strategies to evaluate the effectiveness of 3D image segmentation, rendering, and 3D printing methodologies in supporting surgical procedure planning strategies for enhanced patient outcomes. There is also a strong focus on extended reality (XR) integration.

David Collins, PhD, began their education in 2004 when they obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc) from The University of Sheffield. David then continued their studies at the same university, obtaining a Master of Science (MSc) in Palaeoanthropology in 2008. In 2012, they moved to the University of Liverpool, where they obtained a Master of Research (MRes) in Advanced Biological Sciences in 2013. Finally, they completed their education in 2018, when they obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Musculoskeletal Biology (Medicine) from the University of Liverpool.
